This add-on claims to have "offline" voices which are "never sent to the internet".

However if you block access to the servers it contacts using a firewall:

1) You can see tons of access sent to "support.readaloud.app" and "chart.googleapis.com"

2) The text to speech stops working entirely. It won't read at all and says "Phone not connected". You can't even use the example offline test voice in configurations panel.

How is this even remotely offline if it can't work when not connected to the internet and their servers in particular?

    This is the same technology as existed in win XP.

    since they introduced the piper voices it got a lot better. it's not perfect, but it's WAY better with the piper voices now.

    Tried to use it in Firefox on Mint: The voices are straight out of a horror movie. Not close to reality a bit and horrifying at the same time. There is one called female whisper, and it sounds like a witch whispering to you in a dark forest in a dead of night while you are sleeping.

    Excellent extension. It would be great if it could omit pronouncing the citations at the end of sentences as well as being able to pause after a period in the sentence. Also, if it could avoid reading hyperlinks, that would be cool too. Otherwise, its 5 stars

    you have to use the piper voices extension/expansion thing but this extension has saved my grades

    If you get the addon on mobile it severely limits the voices you can use, you can't even login to your account to access the premium voices or what you paid for. It's obvious that this was made with desktop and laptop use only.

    The update from June 30, 2025, did not fix the error either. Whenever I want to listen to something on the Internet, the error message “Not allowed error” always appears. I use the Google Translate German voice. Now, I'm fed up. I'm definitely going to uninstall this extension now.
