Sorry, I can't fix the background/foreground behavior if it doesn't work correctly (on your Mac only). That's most likely a firefox bug instead, since all an addon has to do is specify which it wants. The setting is a good point, please follow progress on that here: https://gitlab.com/Marnes/plain-text-linker/issues/18 (though I suspect it will also not work for you even if I implement it)
