Reviews for Ant Video Downloader
Ant Video Downloader by ANT

by RafaelLVx, 5 years agoThe extension is described as: "Browser extension with a companion application for downloading and merging streaming video segments."
Does the extension + companion app download and merge streaming video segments? Let's see.
- It lists videos being streamed in segments.
- You can download each segment manually.
That's the full extent of what I could make it do, and making the whole browser lag like hell while at it. So it does get the video segments, you can download them alright provided you get past the super lag (for example waiting for the whole video to complete and not touching anything while it does). But you can't merge anything at all, at least I couldn't find a way to make it happen. And while it does get the segments, you can't download them all in one click. So if a video has hundreds of five second segments, you have to click through the lagging hundreds of time until you get them all. And then you can merge everything yourself. That would be the easy part mind you, but downloading each segment individually is a terrible waste of time that I won't endure.
Finally, I tested it with videos from Globoesporte.com. They are super popular, but they're not Youtube or Vimeo. Maybe it works on those sites, like tons of extensions do, I just don't care about them, and the description doesn't specifically say it's supposed to work on only one site.

As a user of this extension for about 10 years ...a couple of years ago (2021) when they did the update to the new interface style etc. I immediately warned people to not use it.
Its bad, breaks everything, I reverted back to the last oldest version before that very update ... and I am still using that very version (4.9.2) right now.
I find that it still works good and better then any later version ever could.
I see things havent exactly gotten better since the last time I checked in here.
I also see some people asking for the native app but can't find any. I still have it.
mediafire.com/file/3pzb6vrwhsg6ahr/AVD_4.9.2.rar/file
This rar includes the original 4.9.2 addon installation files for Firefox and the matching native app.
For those interested;
Uninstall any current version of the addon and native app.
Simply extract the .rar
Drag the fx.xpi file into firefox, and it should pop up asking to install
Install the native app if you want
But in Firefox, disable Auto updates on this extension, it just ruins it.
In case you were going to want to try .... I can not guarantee that this specific native app version works with a later browser addon version either. It might just start crying about how that's not up to date. I am not gonna go through the trouble of testing it, I just don't care enough. There are other browser addons to begin with as well.
Now if I could only get Mozilla to stop making stupid changes nobody asked for to begin with as they have done in the past few years ... we'd all be happy campers. - Rated 2 out of 5by SzymonL, 8 months ago
