Your web browsing is not complete unless you encounter files which require specialized software to open them and see what is inside them. This is before you even decide it is useful to have them on your computer as each file costs your precious storage space.

Your time wasted waiting for download of file and its specialized software, and bandwidth hogging that happens when you download these specialized files is an unfortunate side effect.

Searching for software to open these specialized files is not straightforward unless you are an expert and even there it requires to download, install and give up your disk space. The risk of these software having vulnerabilities is an added worry.

Even though browser support PDF files, the process is still prone to crashes and corruption and may lead to your web browser or your computer hanging (with a do you want to wait) or worse, crash and taking down everything you are doing at that point in time down with it!

If the software is commercial, it may make your purse significantly lighter as well.

Alas if all this feels so much like another Titanic disaster waiting to happen on your computer, you are not alone!
